After lunch, I decided to hit the last person on the list Agatha gave me, Jack Hernandez. I walked over to the mountain coaster, grateful that I left Doodle safe in my shop because there was a decent line over there and he would’ve wanted to meet and greet all the people. I found Jack pretty easily, thanks to his height.

He was talking to a petite girl with long blond hair tied in a ponytail. Her left arm was covered in gauze, which she was pulling at nervously as she talked.

I moved closer under the guise of looking at the pamphlets they had sitting on the table by the entrance to the coaster.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t want to get you in trouble. You’re not going to lose your job, right? Because if you are, I’ll talk to them about how it was my fault,” the girl was saying in a high-pitched, mousy tone.

“Don’t worry about it. And it wasn’t your fault. I missed a part in the safety check that day and you paid the price for my mistake,” Jack said. “But it’s all taken care of now. You don’t have to worry.”

“Yeah, but that lady said she was going to tell the board what happened, and she looked furious.”

“You know the lady that died?”

“Who doesn’t? She’s being talked about all over the resort.”

“Well, she’s the same lady.”

“No way, you’ve got to be joking?”

“Not in the slightest.”

“So, you’re safe then?”

Jack nodded. “Yeah, my probation passed on Monday. I’m in the clear.”

The woman sighed in relief. “Good. All right, I’ll see you around then.”

“Yup,” Jack said, raising his hand in the air in a wave. He turned around and saw me standing there. I smiled and gave him a half wave before walking over.

“Hey, Jack, Agatha told me you were at the café when Kourtney and I were having our little disagreement. I just wanted to apologize in case I made you feel uncomfortable.”

“Oh, um yeah, that was intense. Poor Agatha was shaking when I saw her. She almost dropped the plate she was holding. I had to help steady her,” Jack said, rubbing the back of his head. He seemed really stressed out. “I don’t think it was you though. Kourtney had a way of finding just the right button to push on everyone.”

“I had the same impression,” I said. I wanted to ask which button she used with Jack, but that type of question would get me nowhere but the doghouse out in the rain. “So, why were you there at the café?”

Jack raised an eyebrow. “What’s it matter to you? Are you trying to throw the suspicion off of yourself?”

I nodded. “Of course. I didn’t murder her, no matter how infuriating she was.”

“Well, you can’t use me as a scapegoat. Nah, huh. I was there to meet someone, but they left, so after steadying Agatha, I left.”

“I see. And were you by chance meeting Gemma?” I said, typing out his answer to my last question.

He looked around, like he was making sure no one was listening, and then said in a very hushed tone.
